He was a witness to the following chaos that killed his two fellow CPM officers, but surrendered, not wanting to hurt anyone. The crew "escorted" (kidnapped) him onto their ship so he wouldn't squeal. With nowhere else to go and no credits to his name, Mack decided to run the ship's hydroponics in exchange for staying on the Terpsichore as a crew member.
